Frequently Asked Questions About

Point Roberts Primary School

1) I’m moving to Point Roberts, Washington is there a school there?

Yes, Point Roberts Washington is located in Whatcom County and the Blaine School District.  There is a Kindergarten through second grade primary school, located at 2050 Benson Road.  It is set in a park like setting with large play fields and trees with a nice nature trail.  The school consists of an office and common area with three classrooms and an enclosed play shed attached. First and Second graders attend school from 9:10 AM-2:50 PM and the Kindergarten students go from 12:15 PM-2:50PM everyday.  During the 2008-09 school year, 14 students are being served by one teacher.

2) If I wanted to drive to the school how would I get there?

Coming from the Peace Arch Border Crossing heading north: Once through the border crossing you are on Hwy 99. Continue heading north till you reach exit 20 (Ladner, Tsawwassen, Pt. Roberts).   When you reach the light turn to your left go over the freeway (heading to Ladner).  You are now on Ladner Trunk Road.  You will go through 4 lights approximately 6 miles.  Turn Left on Hwy 17 going to Tsawwassen go approximately 4 miles.  At the next light turn left on 56th Street; stay on 56th till you reach the border into Pt. Roberts Fire Station, right along the side of the fire station you will see a driveway and sign that says Pt. Roberts Primary School, turn left and follow the driveway to the school.

3)  What is the curriculum like and the structure of a student’s day?

Point Roberts Primary School staff use the curriculum and instructional material adopted by the Blaine School District Board of Directors.  The specifics can be located on the curriculum page at the Blaine School District website.  At Point Roberts Primary School the students are in a multi-age setting where students in kindergarten through 2nd grade work together at the appropriate ability level.  There is one teacher and one paraprofessional who work with the students on academics, Once a month specialists from Blaine Primary School come up and work with the students and staff on their programs.

4) What happens after second grade?

Students from grades three through twelve ride the bus to the main campus in Blaine.  At this time students do not have to have a passport to cross the border. The border agents work with the school district and process the bus quickly through the border even if there are lines for cars.  This drive down from border to border is approximately 40 minutes.  Our buses are equipped with communication devices so they are never out of contact with our transportation department.  The district also has in place options if there is a border closure, such as boating the students to Point Roberts harbor and then the Point Roberts Primary School bus will deliver the students home.  Law Enforcement agencies work closely with the school district communicating with us to ensure the students arrive home quickly and safely.
