How to
Get Good Search Results Using the Internet
Constructing
a Good Search
When you type two words in Google and do a search, such as typing extreme sports, your results will list you sites that have BOTH words. A site that only has the word extreme will not be listed, as well as any site that only has the word sports. Both words must be present, as the following example shows:
Extreme Ironing Bureau :: Ironing under the sky
Welcome to the home of extreme ironing - the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well ...www.extremeironing.com/ - 46k - Sep 28, 2005 - Cached - Similar pages
What if you want your results to include sites that have either the word extreme or the word sports or both words? Then you have to type: extreme OR sports. This type of search will result in the most hits, because you are asking for any combination of the words extreme sports- either separately or together. The following site will be in your results:
eXTReMe Tracking
With the eXTReMe Tracker you get every advanced feature required to picture the visitors of your website. Conveniently arranged, numbers, percentages, ...
extremetracking.com/ - 9k - Cached - Similar pages
What if you want sites that only have the words extreme sports next to each other? Then you have to type: “extreme sports”. This will produce fewer hits because only those sites that have extreme sports side by side will be listed.
One last search tip. Some topics may have many meanings. In
order to restrict the results so you only get the sites that have the
meaning you want, you can ask the search for one meaning but not
another. Such searches use the dash [-] in front of a word. For example, if you want to read about the car the Ford mustang and not
the mustang horse, here is what you write:
mustang -horse (put a space between the g and the -).
