Team Sports is a physical education offering that provides students with opportunities to engage in cooperative team activities. These activities range from traditional sports to cooperative challenges. When possible there will be choices of activities and levels of play (recreational or competitive). The following is an outline of our daily routine:
Student assessment (grading): Students earn 5 points per day for:
This comprises the daily grade which is 80% of the overall grade. The other 20% of the grade is the Fitness component. Students participate in fitness testing once per month. The testing includes a timed mile run, push-up test, and sustained sit-up test. The standards for these tests are based on National Fitness Standards and the grade equivalents are posted in each of the locker rooms.
*Students will also be tested on the sit and reach test for flexibility but this is a non-graded test.
Students are not graded on athletic ability but on their ability to give a good effort that is cooperative for the whole class, as well as maintain an attitude that is positive and thoughtful of other students. The fitness portion of the grade is based on fitness standards but students are acknowledged for effort and improvement. If a student does not dress down in appropriate PE clothing and shoes they may not participate and will lose their 5 points for that day. Those points cannot be made up. If a student is absent and that absence is excused (showing Ms. C the blue note) the student can make up the lost points with one of several choices per Ms. C. If a student is sick or injured they must bring a note from home or the school nurse to excuse them. After 3 days of these kinds of notes it must be a doctorÕs note to excuse them. Any excused absence or non-participation can be made up Ð any non-excused cannot. This class is designed very simply and for success, however the student is the only one who can guarantee that success through communication, and by managing themselves and their grade.
