Families as Partners
All parents are invited to get involved in their child's education. This level of involvement may vary, as there are many demands on a parent's time, especially for working and single parents. There are a variety of ways you can contribute to your child's progress in school:
*Communicate with your child's teacher often.
*Spend some time in the classroom - volunteer to help with class or school activities.
*Help your child understand the connection between school learning and learning in everyday life.
*Provide a quiet area for homework assignments; help your child to organize his/her time and supplies for homework.
*Listen and ask questions to what your child has to say about school and his/her activities. Your interest can be the best motivator possible, it will help your child grow in self-confidence, social skills, and insure a successful time in elementary school.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Academic success is a priority at Blaine Elementary School. Parents are encouraged to meet with their child's teacher. All teachers are available to meet before and after school, but please call for an appointment. School wide conferences will be held November 18-24 and March 2-8.
The Honor Level System is a system used to accurately record student behavior and reinforce positive behavior through recognition/awards. It is a type of discipline that shows respect for the student. The system does not replace a teacher's current classroom discipline.
Blaine Elementary School Honor Level System has two consequence components. Students who regularly display positive behavior at school and stay on Honor Level One, are recognized frequently.
Recognizing the positive may include:
* Special assemblies
* Special school events
* Special privileges at school
*Treats at lunch or Special Honor Level extras
These events are scheduled approximately every two weeks giving students an incentive to stay on Honor Level One. Students who stay on Honor Level One for extended periods of time are "All Stars" (those students with "0" demerit points) and may receive other benefits above and beyond Honor Level One. At the end of each semester there is a Fun Field Trip for all students with 4 or fewer demerit points.
Our goal as a staff is to have every one of our students on Honor Level One. Realistically, some students may experience difficulty along the way, yet at any given time over 90% of our students are on Honor Level One and over 40% remain there the entire year!
The most important feature of the Honor Level System is that students, regardless of how far they have dropped in the levels, can get back to Honor Level One status by keeping their records clean for a two week period. This "forgiving" aspect of the plan, coupled with the positive "rewards" that occur for the students on Honor Level One, gives students experiencing trouble an incentive to get back to the top level.
Honor Level One
An Honor Level One student is one who meets behavioral expectations. To qualify for Honor Level One, a student must not be assigned to detention at all in the last 14 calendar days. Problems on school buses and other situations involving discipline also disqualify a student from Honor Level One.
Honor Level Two
An Honor Level Two student rarely has difficulty meeting the behavioral expectations, but may have one or two infractions in the last two weeks. Some of the extra privileges awarded Honor Level One students may also be awarded. A student on this level is not denied regular school activities, but may not attend activities specifically offered for an Honor Level One student.
Honor Level Three
An Honor Level Three student is one who is having difficulty meeting the behavioral expectations and has been cited several times for infractions in the last two weeks. Depending on the nature and frequency of the infractions, a student on Honor Level Three may be restricted from some school activities.
Honor Level Four
An Honor Level Four student has consistent difficulty in meeting the behavioral expectations. A student on Honor Level Four will be restricted from all school activities and will be placed on probationary status if he/she remains on Honor Level Four for an extended period.
A student who does not remain on Honor Level One always has the opportunity to return to Honor Level One by demonstrating a positive change in behavior and receiving no detentions for at least 14 calendar days. Incentives to move up in Honor Level are designed to be positive motivators.
BLAINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS
CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS
Negative behavior is dealt with in a progressive, fair and systematic manner in this plan. Student behavior is examined in a two week window of time. Negative consequences are assigned based upon the number of infractions a student commits in a two week time period. They are as follows:
1 infraction = 15 minute noon detention
2 infractions = 15 minute noon detention
3 infractions =30 minute noon detention
4 infractions =30 minutes after school detention
5 infractions = Administrative assignment (must talk with the Principal in addition to consequence assigned)
In addition to these consequences, students experiencing problems with behavior also experience a drop in their Honor Level status. A student with one or two infractions in a two week period will drop from Honor Level 1 to Honor Level 2, and may become ineligible for Honor Level activities scheduled during that two week time frame. Students with three or four infractions may drop to Honor Level 3. Students with five or more infractions in a two week period may lose other privileges at school or may be sent home.
