Our current work in math is in the area of change. The title of the math unit is Growth Patterns, and is a unit on patterns, functions and change. This unit is our big algebra unit for the year. Students are currently looking at graphing how students might grow between 2 - 10 years old. We'll be describing the changes in several ways. Data and graphing are involved in this piece, as well as generalizing an expression for constant change.

Students are now finishing their presentations on the events that lead up to the Revolutionary War. They are working in groups to prepare a presentation. Click the "Come Join the Revolution" button above to see their task. Presentations begin this week.

Reading will continue to focus on strategy instruction. We are now going into the area synthesizing. This is a key strategy for 5th graders. Often they find it difficult to decide what details to include as they do research and present what they know. We will also be looking at deciding what the main idea of a piece of reading is at this time. This is a very important skill for all to have.
