Program Goal Area 3.0: Social Skills Grades 3-5

The physical education classroom is the ideal setting for the development of effective social living. It is essential that children learn how to learn the merits of participation, develop cooperative skills, handle competitive situations, and develop tolerance for each other in a variety of activities. The outcomes within our physical education curriculum for social skill development revolves around state and national standards addressing this specific area. Our Unit Themes provide an ideal educational medium to introduce and reinforce these concepts.

Social Skill learning goal and outcomes relates with both the state standard Health and Fitness - Essential Academic Learning Requirements (Benchmark 1 -Fourth Grade) and the national standard NASPE content standards for a physically educated person:

EALR1: The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life: Movement, physical fitness, and nutrition.

 1.2: Safely participates in a variety of developmentally appropriate physical activities

 Benchmark 1: Follows rules and safety procedures while participating in a variety of physical activities.

EALR2: The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy life: Recognize patterns of growth and development, reduce health risks, and live safely. To meet this standard the student will:

 2.3: Acquire skills to live safely and reduce health risks.

 Benchmark 1: Explain one's right to personal and physical safety.

EALR3: The student analyzes and evaluates the impact of real-life influences on health. To meet this standard the student will:

3.3: Use social skills to promote health and safety in a variety of situations

Benchmark 1: Express emotions constructively and form safe and successful relationships.

Recognize social skills to keep out of trouble and resist pressure from others.

 NASPE5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Program Learning Outcomes for Social Skills 3.0

3.1 · cooperation and team work

The student will be able to work cooperatively and productively with a partner, small group, and larger group regardless of race, age, gender, religious preferences and / or physical limitations

3.2 · rules and etiquette

The student will demonstrate the ability to follow, with few reminders, activity-specific rules, procedures and etiquette.

3.3 · safety

The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to follow class safety rules and expectations, and utilize safety principals in a variety of activity situations

3.4 · sportsmanship

The student will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude and sense of fair play during any and all group activities regardless of the outcome(s).

3.5 · participation

The student will come to class prepared to participate, and demonstrate participation in any and all activities
