Soccer Related Activities Class Size: 24 - 28 students
Grades 3, 4 & 5 Day 3: Offense/Defense Position Work

Goal Areas & Learning Outcomes:

TSWBAT jog/walk trying to increase their heart rate 2.1; 3.5

TSWBAT demonstrate the proper way to take their pulse, and compare to the Target Heart Rate wall chart 2.3

TSWBAT demonstrate proper stretching/knowledge of the quadriceps muscle group 2.4; 2.5

TSWBAT control the ball through dribbling and trapping 1.11

TSWBAT demonstrate proper kicking skills while involved in a game situation 1.3; 1.5, 1.7,; 3.1; 3.3; 3.4, 3.5; 4.1; 4.2

Safety (3.3):
Students will follow 3 simple rules/Levels/Solving Conflicts; have shoes tied/secured properly; focus on safe locomotor movement. Students are not to purposely kick the soccer balls at another student.

Set-Up and Equipment:
28 soccer balls; 2 cones for every 4 players - set up six feet apart around the gym (12 - 18 cones) - or if out at the tennis courts set up cones the width of the vertical beams using the courts as offense area; dry erase markers and board

Introduction:
Time Activity

1 Have Students line up along the wall as they come in (to tie their shoes).

3,4,5 Once all the students have arrived have them jog/walk TO MUSIC for the time of thier grade
(i.e. 3 min for 3rd graders, etc.)

2 Stretch: Intro Quadriceps (or "Quads") stretch. Discuss the quadriceps muscle, how many muscles make up the Quads, and how to stretch the group. Then stretch for 30 seconds each side.

3 min Soccer warm-up dribbling the ball in self-space with CONTROL with sweet spot, then sour spot, then backwards. Encourage students to go faster each time while still controlling the ball

10 min
2 on 2 Skill Drill: one goalie and one defender will defend a six foot goal as established along the wall. The two offense will start at half court and work on passing the ball back and forth trying to get the ball past the goalie. Positions will be switched four different times with:
Position 1: Goalie
Position 2: Defender
Position 3: Right wing
Position 4: Left wing
Demo goalie position of using hands and feet to block the ball; and rolling ball out to defender. Defender's job is to clear ball from goal down the wing sides, or force the ball away from wingmen. Discuss the role of the two wings in passing back and forth with one another.
