The purpose of this 6-day unit is to teach students, using the MyPyramid the basic concept of nutrition based on EALR 1.4:
Understand the relationship of nutrition and food nutrients to physical performance and body composition
During these 6-day mini-lectures/activities students will learn about the role of nutrients:
Carbs
Protien
Fats
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Additionally, students will learn and define "calorie" and "diet", along with an introduction to reading food labels.
To meet the standard (rubric score of 3) set by the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) for Health and Fitness and their Grade Level Expectations a physically educated student will know and be able to do for:

3rd Grade:
- Match nutrients to appropriate food groups
- Knows that food provides nutrional content and energy
- List nutritional habits affecting overall health, and growth/development (EALR 2.1.1.c)
4th Grade:
- List the key nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) in appropriate
food groups
- Analyzes caloric intake and expenditure
- Recognize how dietary habits (food selection) affect overall health, and growth/development (EALR 2.1.1.c)
5th Grade:
- Compare and contrast food labels for nutritional value
- Explain the impact of healthy eating on physical performance and academic performance
- Describe how dietary habits (food selection) affect overall health, and growth/development (EALR 2.1.1.c)

Formative assessment will be through instructional task activities, and a summative written assessment on day 6 including the Classroom Based Assessment for Grade 5: Mrs. Trimble's Muffins
