Identifiable Program Learning Outcomes for each Goal Area

I have identified four program goals and their learning outcomes to reach our curriculum objectives within the BES PE program.

Basically, learning outcomes are considered

WHAT THE STUDENT SHOULD KNOW AND BE ABLE TO DO AS A RESULT OF HAVING BEEN IN THIS PE CURRICULUM.

The following links are the four program goals for the BES PE Curriculum, and their Learning Outcomes:

 1.0: Skill Themes

 2.0: Physical Fitness Concepts

 3.0: Social Skills

 4.0: Knowledge

Percent Emphasis by Program Goal Area and Grade Level:

Program Goal Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Program Emphasis
1.0: Skill Themes  60%  60%  55%  58%
2.0: Physical Fitness Concepts  10%  10%  15%  12%
3.0: Social Skills  20%  17.5%  15%  18%
4.0: Knowledge  10%  12.5%  15%  12%

Estimate of Available Time For Achieving Functional Mastery of a Learning Outcome

By The End of a Student's 5th Grade (an Example):

How much time will it take for a student to master a Learning Outcome rather than just being exposed to the Learning Outcome? Below is an example of the Learning Outcome for the student, and the definition of the mastery for the particular Learning Outcome.

Program Goal Area 1.0: Skill Theme

Learning Outcome: 1.1 throwing

Students will be able to develop and demonstrate the proper mature form (underhand and overhand) as it relates to throwing a variety of balls within various activities.

Mastery:

body sideways to target, arm way back steps with opposite foot, rotates hips, leads with the elbow, and follow through

Unit Themes: soccer (1 day), football (7 days), basketball (1 day), softball (8 days)

17 days of contact time x 10 minutes of Learning Outcomes emphasis for that particular Outcome = 170 minutes per grade level, or 2.8 hours a year

3 years x 2.8 hours = 8.5 hours to master the learning outcome for throwing over 3 years

*It is essential to note that each outcome is emphasized differently within each Unit Theme due to the level of difficulty for the student to master. Therefore, what might take 8.5 hours to master for the skill theme of throwing may take less or more time for another Learning Outcome in another Goal Area.

Estimate of Available Instructional Time for each of the Grades 3-5

Three block (music, library and PE) rotation during 180 days = 60 days of PE

60 days of PE x 10% lost to field trips, early release, etc. = 54 days

54 days x 40 minutes a class session = 2160 minutes, or 36 hours of yearly instruction, per grade level.

37 weeks in the school year divided into 2160 minutes = 58 minutes (65 minutes without 10% lost) of PE per week

*State Requirement for PE minutes per week grade levels 1-8 = 100 minutes (WAC 180-50-135)

Determining the Number of Learning Outcomes Per Grade Level:

Teaching Time
Number of Outcomes
 Grade 3-5

 37 weeks x 60 days

60 days x 40 min. = 2400 min

2400 min. x 3 grades = 7200 min.

7200 min. x .10 (lost time) = 6480 min.

6480 min. x 28 Learning Outcomes (from the 4 Goal Areas)

=

223.5 min. per each outcome, or 3.7 hours available for each outcome, on average, over a 3-year period.

3.7 hours (avg.) available for each of the 28 Learning Outcomes
