General Program Goals for the BES PE Curriculum

Elementary School

The elementary years incorporates the basic learned acquisition of multiple skills from the primary years into a balanced curriculum that covers fundamental skills, recreational and sport skills, games, rhythms and dance, stunts and tumbling (gymnastics), and individual and duel activities. Emphasis is placed on developing a broad foundation of motor skills for all students through curriculum while fostering respect and responsibility for others and self through instruction. Students at this level find time for experimentation, practice, and decision making about all movement possibilities. The development of personal health and fitness habits also begin during the elementary years focusing on concepts of human wellness, lifetime activity and personal habits.

These program goals are appropriately derived from the nationally established content standards (what a student should know, and be able to do) for the physical education program developed by NASPE for a physically educated person:

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities

2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and perfromance of physical activities

3. Participates regularly in physical activity

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness

5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings

6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyement, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction

These content standards are meshed with meeting the Washington statewide academic standards for Health and Fitness - Essential Academic Learning Requirements (Benchmark 1 -Fourth Grade):

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life: Movement, physical fitness, and nutrition.

2. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy life: Recognize patterns of growth and development, reduce health risks, and live safely.

3. The Student analyzes and evaluates the impact of real-life influences on health.

4. The student effectively analyzes health and safety information to develop health and fitness plans based on life goals.

***Note: These health and fitness EALR's are not all achievable in the BES PE curriculum due to the limitations of the allocated time your child spends in PE class. The classroom teacher is also responsible per grade level for some of these EALR's.

Areas of focus within the BES PE program revolves around 7 Unit Themes over the 55 days your child comes to PE.

Within those 7 Unit themes and 55 days I want your child to become competent in the following:

Skill Themes

Students in grades 3-5 will be exposed to, experience, and develop skills necessary for recreation, adventure, and sport activities, along with educational dance and gymnastics. I present these skill themes within the Unit Themes in hopes to 1)provide a purpose for the student participate and develop the skill(s) of focus, and 2)once skills have been developed would then promote the possibility of a student feeling confident enough to participate in a lifetime of activity.
