1. 11 is the smallest whole number which gives a remainder of 1 when it is divided by 2, a remainder of 2 when it is divided by 3, and a remainder of 3 when it is divided by 4. What is the second smallest whole number which meets these criteria?

2. The sum of two numbers is 98. Their difference is 40. What is their product?

3. A cafeteria has 2 lunch lines. Students in one lunch line are served at the rate of 24 students every 5 minutes, and students in the other are served at the rate of 12 students every 2 minutes. At these rates, how many minutes will it take to serve 216 students?

4. If this pattern continues, what will be the tenth fraction?



5. In 1991, one U.S. dollar was worth $1.15 in Canada. In 2001, a Canadian dollar is worth $0.69 in the United States. If Joe bought U.S. dollars with $100 worth of Canadian money in 1991, what would its value be (to the nearest Canadian dollar) if he changed it back to Canadian dollars in 2001.

7. On the navigation chart of San Juan Islands 5 inches represents 7 nautical miles. The chart distance from Deception Pass to Iceberg Point is inches, from Iceberg Point to San Juan Channel is inches, from San Juan Channel to Turn Island is inches, and from Turn Island to Friday Harbor is inches. If a boat travels 14 knots (14 nautical miles per hour), how long, to the nearest tenth of a minute, will it take to get from Deception Pass to Friday Harbor (by way of Iceberg Point, San Juan Channel, and Turn Island)?


8. Harry is cleaning the laboratory aquarium. In cleaning the aquarium he needs to drain the water, scrub the sides, and then fill it again. He also needs to remove a large rock from the aquarium and scrub it separately. There are two drains which each drain the aquarium at the rate of 2 inches of depth per minute. There is a tap which fills it at the rate of 3 inches of depth per minute. According to the graph of the water depth in the aquarium and Harry’s time on the job, how many minutes is it from when the second drain is opened to when the tap is opened?



9. A marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards long. There are 1760 yards in a mile. The speed of sound is 1088 feet per second. The Linear Marathon is to be run on a long straight course. If Zeus starts the race with a lightning bolt, to the nearest second, how long will it take the sound of the thunder to reach the finish line?

10. When 3 numbers are multiplied 2 at a time, their products are 493, 561, and 957. What is the sum of the 3 numbers?
